- Gunung Mas, the estate most people mean by Puncak tea plantation, sits at Jalan Raya Puncak KM 87 in Cisarua, Bogor Regency, at 800 to 1,200 metres, and opens 08:00 to 17:00 daily.
- Entry is about Rp15,500 on weekdays and Rp20,000 at weekends; a guided tea walk adds roughly Rp20,000 to Rp35,000, and the tea bridge about Rp10,000.
- Go on a weekday. At weekends Bogor police run a one-way system on the Puncak road (uphill in the morning, downhill from midday) and sometimes an odd-even plate rule from the Gadog junction.
- Arrive by 08:00 for mist over the rows and pluckers at work; Bogor gets roughly 3,500 to 4,000 mm of rain a year, so afternoon showers are normal in every season.
- The estate is a working black-tea garden founded in 1910, now run by the state plantation group PTPN, and it makes CTC tea rather than hand-rolled leaf.
Puncak tea plantation is the shorthand Jakarta uses for Gunung Mas, the state-run tea estate draped over the Puncak Pass between Bogor and Cianjur. It is the closest working tea garden to the Indonesian capital, which makes it both the easiest tea-country day trip in Java and one of the most crowded. This guide covers what the visit actually involves, what each ticket costs, how to beat the weekend traffic rules, and when the light and weather are on your side.
What to Expect at Gunung Mas
According to Indonesia’s official tourism site, Gunung Mas lies on Jalan Raya Puncak KM 87 in Tugu Selatan village, Cisarua district, between 800 and 1,200 metres above sea level, and about 1.5 to 2 hours from Jakarta in normal traffic. The same source dates the estate to 1910, when a French company planted it; it changed hands several times before nationalisation in 1958. It was long managed by PTPN VIII, and in 2025 reporting the operator is named as PTPN I Regional 2 after the state plantation groups were reorganised.
Published figures for the estate’s size do not agree: the tourism ministry cites about 1,623 hectares under business-use rights, a 2008 Jakarta Post feature gave about 2,500 hectares, and a 2024 NOW! Jakarta piece gave about 500 hectares, which probably reflects the area open to visitors rather than the whole concession. What you see is unambiguous: clipped, waist-high tea bushes running in contour rows across steep slopes, with Mount Gede-Pangrango and Mount Salak on the horizon when the cloud lifts.
A working CTC tea garden
Gunung Mas is not a boutique estate. Its factory makes black tea by the CTC method (crush, tear, curl) after withering and oxidation, and the 2008 Jakarta Post visit described stacks of 55 kg sacks ready for shipment. Output has fallen over the years: in 2013 Bisnis Indonesia reported daily production down from about 30 tonnes to about 10 tonnes, blamed on ageing bushes, weather and a shrinking planted area, and the estate began leaning harder on agrotourism. That history explains the mix you will find today: real pluckers in the rows, a factory that still runs, and a growing list of rides, photo spots and villas around them.
The main activities
- Tea walk. Guided walks follow estate paths through the rows, with an official guide explaining cultivation, plucking and plantation management. A Viva Bogor report from April 2026 put the route options at 2 km to 6 km and the price at about Rp30,000 per person, including a serving of tea; the tourism ministry describes walks of 4 to 8 km.
- Tea bridge. A raised wooden walkway of about 260 metres over the bushes, listed by the tourism ministry at about Rp10,000 extra.
- Factory visit. The estate offers factory visits for individuals and groups; no current published price exists, so ask at the ticket office when you arrive.
- Adventure add-ons. ATV rides, horse riding, a flying fox, a rainbow slide and a paragliding launch area sit on the same land.
- Stays. Bungalows, villas, camping and glamping are on site; a September 2025 RM.id report described upgraded villas facing the tea and a planned Tea Experience programme in which visitors pick shoots and brew their own tea.
Booking Information
For a standard visit you do not need to book anything. You buy the entry ticket at the gate and arrange the tea walk, factory visit or rides on site. Travelspromo, which lists the estate contact as 0811 2051 616, notes that everyone aged 3 and above needs a ticket and that each ticket can be exchanged for a sachet of the estate’s tea, a small but useful detail the big listicles skip.
Advance contact makes sense in three cases. First, groups wanting a guided factory visit should call ahead, since tours run by arrangement. Second, overnight stays in the bungalows or villas fill up on Indonesian long weekends. Third, anyone planning to paraglide should check conditions on the day, because flights depend on wind and the launch area is weather-dependent.
Weekend traffic rules you must plan around
The Puncak road is notorious for gridlock, and Bogor Regency police manage it with two tools. The first is a situational one-way system: for the weekend of 17 and 18 October 2026, reported times were uphill toward Puncak from 07:00 to 11:30 and downhill toward Jakarta from 12:00 to 18:00, with officers free to adjust them. The second is an odd-even plate rule enforced from the Simpang Gadog junction to the Tugu Lampu Gentur junction in Cianjur, which officers apply on some weekends and holidays and drop on others. When it applies, a car whose last plate digit does not match the date’s odd or even status is turned back.
The practical rule: leave Jakarta early enough to pass Gadog before the uphill window closes, and do not plan to drive back down before midday at a weekend, because the road may be running one way against you. Check the current weekend’s announcement from Bogor police the day before you travel.
Costs and What Is Included
Gate prices at Gunung Mas are low; the rides are where the bill grows. The table below collects the most recent published figures and their dates. Prices change without notice, so treat them as a guide.
| Item | Price (IDR) | What it includes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry, weekday | 15,500 | Site access; ticket exchangeable for one tea sachet | Indonesia.travel; Travelspromo, Jun 2026 |
| Entry, weekend | 20,000 | As above | Indonesia.travel; Travelspromo, Jun 2026 |
| Guided tea walk | 20,000 to 35,000 | Guide, 1 to 2.5 hours depending on route; one serving of tea (per Viva Bogor) | Travelspromo, Jun 2026; Viva Bogor, Apr 2026 |
| Tea bridge | about 10,000 | Walk on the raised boardwalk over the rows | Indonesia.travel |
| Rainbow slide | 25,000 to 35,000 | Slide ride | Indonesia.travel |
| Paragliding area | 13,000 | Access to the launch area only, not a flight | Travelspromo, Jun 2026 |
| ATV | about 150,000 | About 4 km off-road, two riders, one guide | Explore Sunda (undated) |
| Horse riding | from about 100,000 | Per horse, negotiable; 30-minute and 2-hour routes | Explore Sunda (undated) |
| Parking, car / motorbike / bus | 10,000 / 5,000 / 30,000 | Vehicle entry | Travelspromo, Jun 2026 |
A couple driving up on a weekday, paying entry, a tea walk and the tea bridge, should spend well under Rp150,000 at the estate before food. The real costs of the day are transport from Jakarta and lunch. If you add an ATV ride and a horse ride for two, budget several hundred thousand rupiah more.
A Day Trip Plan from Jakarta
Most visitors treat Gunung Mas as a day trip. The plan below assumes a weekday and a hired car; at weekends shift everything earlier to fit the one-way windows.
| Time | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 05:30 to 06:00 | Leave central Jakarta by car, or take the KRL commuter train to Bogor and hire a car there | Beat the toll-road and Puncak traffic |
| 08:00 | Arrive as the gates open; buy entry and book a tea walk | Mist still sits on the rows and pluckers are working |
| 08:30 to 10:30 | Guided tea walk, then the tea bridge | Best light and coolest air of the day |
| 10:45 | Factory visit if running; collect your tea sachet | See how CTC black tea is made |
| 12:00 | Lunch at an estate cafe or a warung on Jalan Raya Puncak | Shelter before the usual afternoon rain |
| 13:00 to 15:00 | Optional: ATV or horse ride, or a detour to Telaga Warna | Add adventure or a lake view |
| 15:00 | Head back toward Jakarta | Avoid the evening jam on the downhill road |
Getting there without a car
The KRL Commuter Line runs from Jakarta Kota to Bogor; KAI Commuter put the trip at about 85 minutes after its 2023 timetable change, and Manggarai to Bogor at about 62 minutes. Check current times on the commuterline.id site or the operator’s app. From Bogor the estate is a climb up Jalan Raya Puncak and the simplest option is a ride-hailing car or a driver hired for the day.
Tips for First-Timers
Dress for cool and wet. At 800 to 1,200 metres the estate is far cooler than Jakarta; Travelspromo gives an average of 12 to 22 degrees Celsius. Bring a light jacket, closed shoes with grip for the red-earth paths, and a rain shell.
Respect the pluckers. The people in the rows are working. Ask before photographing anyone up close, stay on the paths, and do not pick leaves unless a guide invites you to.
Do not expect a tasting bar. Gunung Mas produces CTC black tea, so this is not the place for a flight of single-estate teas. The value is in seeing the rows and the factory. If you want to understand how industrial and orthodox processing differ, our guide on how to book an authentic tea factory tour explains what to ask on the factory floor.
Toilets and food. One long-running visitor guide warns that good toilets are hard to find across the grounds, so plan your stops. Cafes on site serve estate tea drinks, and during Ramadan some restaurants open only in the late afternoon.
Cash. Carry small rupiah notes for gate tickets, parking, ride operators and roadside stalls.
Best Time to Go
Tea is picked year-round in Indonesia, so there is no closed season and no single flush to chase. What changes is the weather and the crowd. Bogor is nicknamed the City of Rain, and a February 2025 Good News From Indonesia explainer put annual rainfall at about 3,500 to 4,000 mm, with the rainy season peaking around January. Even in the drier months, afternoon showers are normal, so the morning is the reliable window everywhere on the calendar.
Crowds matter more than rain. Weekends and school holidays bring Jakarta traffic, the one-way system and full car parks; weekdays are calm. Long weekends around Indonesian public holidays are the worst days to attempt the trip. For seasonal timing across other tea countries, see our seasonal guide to visiting tea plantations.
Alternatives and Similar Experiences
Telaga Warna and Telaga Saat. Further up the pass, the small lake of Telaga Warna sits among forest and tea. Good News From Indonesia reported in 2024 that entry through the first post costs Rp25,000 per person and covers Telaga Warna, while Telaga Saat, a roughly 1.5-hectare lake described as a headwater of the Ciliwung River, charges Rp10,000. It pairs well with a morning at Gunung Mas.
Rancabali, Ciwidey. South of Bandung, the Rancabali estate sits higher, at 1,400 to 1,900 metres, has been producing tea since 1870, and covers about 3,500 hectares, according to the tourism ministry. Most of it is free to enter and a Walini factory visit costs about Rp5,000. It is a longer trip from Jakarta than Puncak.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the entrance fee at Gunung Mas Puncak?
Entry to Gunung Mas costs about Rp15,500 per person on weekdays and Rp20,000 at weekends, according to Indonesia’s tourism ministry and a June 2026 price listing. Children aged 3 and over need a ticket. Parking is extra, about Rp10,000 for a car, and the tea walk, tea bridge and rides are paid separately on site.
What are the opening hours of the Puncak tea plantation?
Gunung Mas opens from 08:00 to 17:00 every day. Arrive close to opening time for the best experience: mist often still covers the tea rows, pluckers are working, and the air is cool. By early afternoon cloud and rain usually build over the Puncak Pass, and weekend traffic rules start pushing cars back down toward Jakarta.
How long does it take to get from Jakarta to Gunung Mas?
The drive from Jakarta to Gunung Mas takes about 1.5 to 2 hours in normal traffic, according to Indonesia’s tourism ministry. At weekends it can take much longer because of congestion on the Puncak road and the police one-way system. Leaving before 06:00 on a weekday is the most reliable way to keep the journey near the lower figure.
Can you tour the tea factory at Gunung Mas?
Yes, Gunung Mas offers tea factory visits for individuals and groups, showing the withering, CTC cutting and oxidation steps used to make its black tea. No current price is published, so ask at the ticket office on arrival. Groups should call the estate in advance, because visits run by arrangement and depend on the factory schedule that day.
Is Gunung Mas worth visiting on a weekend?
Gunung Mas is worth visiting on a weekend only if you leave Jakarta very early and accept crowds. Bogor police run a one-way system on the Puncak road, uphill in the morning and downhill from about midday, and sometimes enforce an odd-even plate rule from Gadog. A weekday visit is calmer, cheaper at the gate and far easier to plan.
