What is tea travel?
Tea travel is a trip planned around tea: staying on working estates, touring factories, picking leaf during a harvest, taking part in tea ceremonies and drinking in historic tea houses. Most trips are timed to a region’s harvest, because that is when gardens and factories are busiest and the new season’s tea is on sale.
When is the best time to visit tea plantations?
In most regions, spring and autumn. Spring brings the first and most prized pickings, from late February to May depending on altitude and latitude. Autumn brings Darjeeling’s autumn flush in October and November and Taiwan’s winter oolong from late October. Our seasonal guide covers each region month by month.
Is autumn a good time for a tea trip?
Yes, and it is underrated. Many regions have a second harvest, crowds are smaller than in spring, and the air is cooler and clearer: October and November give Darjeeling some of its best Kanchenjunga views, and autumn is the clearest walking weather in Japan’s Wazuka tea fields.
Can you visit a tea factory in November?
Often, but check before you go. In Darjeeling, processing slows as plucking stops and Happy Valley usually closes from November to February, so October is safer. In Taiwan’s high mountains November is the winter harvest, and Anxi’s autumn harvest runs September to November.
