Every cup of tea tells a story — of the land where it was grown, the hands that harvested it, and the centuries of tradition that shaped its flavor. Steeped Travels exists to tell those stories honestly.

Who We Are

John Milton, founder of Steeped Travels, in a tea garden

John Milton — Founder & Editor

I’m John Milton, the founder and editor of Steeped Travels. I started this project because I kept searching for honest, well-researched tea travel guides — and couldn’t find them. Most of what I found online was either thin affiliate content or AI-generated filler dressed up with stock photos. I wanted something better: writing that names the actual cultivars, the actual producers, the actual institutions — and admits what it doesn’t know.

My wife Thuy Tran is my travel partner and the reason half of our Southeast Asian coverage exists. She grew up around Vietnamese tea culture and has a nose for when a guide is repeating hearsay versus speaking from actual knowledge.

John and Thuy — the team behind Steeped Travels

Steeped Travels is a small, owner-run editorial project. Articles are researched and written by a tight rotation of contributors and reviewed by me before publication. We do not run an anonymous content farm and we do not pretend to be a large media company. When a guide is based on a place we have actually visited, we say so. When it is built primarily from secondary research, we say that too — and we cite the regional authorities, growers, and academic sources we relied on.

What We Cover

  • Tea Destinations — in-depth guides to specific tea-growing regions, with named cultivars, named producers, and named institutions wherever possible.
  • Cultural Experiences — tea ceremonies, plantation tours, and immersive encounters, written to respect the communities that host them.
  • Travel Planning — practical, current information on when to visit, how to get there, and what it costs.
  • Tea Culture & History — the documented history of tea cultivars, regions, and traditions, with sources.

Our Editorial Standards

We try to write the way an experienced traveller would talk to a friend: specific, useful, and willing to admit what we don’t know. A few principles we hold ourselves to:

  • Name things. If we mention a tea estate, we name it. If we reference a cultivar, we give the varietal designation. Vague adjectives (“stunning”, “world-class”) are not information.
  • Cite sources. When we rely on research from a tea board, agricultural institute, or academic study, we say so.
  • Correct openly. If we get a fact wrong — the name of an institution, the year a cultivar was released, the lineage of a tea — tell us and we will correct the article and note the correction.
  • No fake experience. If we haven’t been somewhere, we don’t pretend we have. Guides built from secondary research are clearly framed that way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Steeped Travels?

Steeped Travels is an independent editorial project dedicated to tea travel — covering tea-growing regions, cultural experiences, plantation tours, and tea ceremonies around the world. We combine firsthand research with deep knowledge of tea culture to produce accurate, useful travel guides.

Who writes the content?

Articles are written by a small rotation of contributors and edited by John Milton. When a piece draws on secondary research rather than firsthand experience, we say so explicitly. We are not a content farm.

Is Steeped Travels affiliated with any tea brands or tour operators?

No. Steeped Travels is an independent editorial project. We do not accept payment for editorial coverage. Some articles may contain affiliate links to booking platforms or tea retailers — these are clearly disclosed and do not influence our editorial recommendations.

What regions does Steeped Travels cover?

We cover tea-growing and tea-culture destinations worldwide, including Japan (Kyoto, Uji, Shizuoka), China (Hangzhou, Yunnan, Fujian), India (Darjeeling, Assam, Nilgiris), Sri Lanka (Ella, Nuwara Eliya), Taiwan, South Korea, and emerging tea destinations in Africa and the Americas.

How can I suggest a destination or correct an error?

We welcome corrections and destination suggestions. If you spot a factual error — a wrong institution name, an outdated price, or an incorrect cultivar — please use our contact form. We read every message and will correct verified errors with a note in the article.

How often is Steeped Travels updated?

We publish new destination guides and tea culture articles regularly. Existing guides are reviewed and updated when significant changes occur — new venues open, seasonal schedules change, or new research becomes available. Each article shows its last-modified date.
