- Rooibos is Aspalathus linearis, a legume shrub that grows commercially in one place on earth: the Cederberg region of South Africa’s Western and Northern Cape. Legally it is a tisane, not a tea.
- It is naturally caffeine-free, low in tannin, and contains none of the catechins found in green and black tea. Its signature compounds are aspalathin and nothofagin.

Search rooibos benefits and you will get the same list on every page: antioxidants, heart health, bone strength, better skin. What almost none of those pages tell you is how much of that has actually been tested in people, which type of rooibos was tested, or which of the popular claims failed when researchers measured them. What rooibos actually is
Rooibos comes from Aspalathus linearis, a needle-leafed shrub in the legume family. It is not related to Camellia sinensis, the plant behind green, black, oolong and white tea, and the South African Rooibos Council notes that rooibos is legally classified as a tisane, a botanical drink, rather than a tea. That distinction matters more than it sounds: it is why rooibos has no caffeine, no catechins, and a chemistry that has to be judged on its own evidence rather than borrowed from green tea research.
The plant is a dryland crop dependent on natural rainfall in a narrowly defined area. According to the Rooibos Council, estimated production for 2025 was around 15,000 tons, down from 17,000 in 2023, with the past two decades swinging between 13,000 and 25,000 tons as rainfall varies. Exports crossed 10,000 tons for the first time in 2025 at roughly 10,930 tons, reaching more than 50 markets. Japan is the largest buyer at 33 percent.
Origin is legally protected. In 2021 the European Commission entered rooibos on its register of protected designations of origin, the first African food product to make that list: a product grown outside the designated South African municipalities cannot legally be sold as rooibos in the EU. The industry also operates an Access and Benefit Sharing agreement, the first of its kind globally, under which 42.7 million rand went to traditional knowledge holders between 2019 and 2024.

Red versus green rooibos: the aspalathin question
Nearly every article about rooibos benefits is describing red rooibos while citing research done on green. The two are the same plant, processed differently, and the gap in their active compounds is enormous.
Red rooibos is oxidised, often called fermented in the trade, which develops the amber colour and the sweet, woody flavour most people recognise. That process destroys most of the aspalathin. Analyses of hot-water extracts put fermented rooibos at roughly 5.8 grams of aspalathin per kilogram against about 110 grams per kilogram for green, unfermented rooibos, with under a fifth of the original aspalathin surviving oxidation. During processing it converts into other flavonoids including orientin and isoorientin.
The irony is that green rooibos, the version with the compound researchers are most interested in, is the version least studied in humans. The 2024 systematic review flagged exactly this, calling unfermented rooibos relatively unresearched despite its higher polyphenol content and describing it as a missed opportunity.

What the evidence actually shows
The honest headline is that rooibos research is overwhelmingly laboratory and animal work. A systematic review published in the journal Beverages in 2024 searched five databases through October 2024, screened 3,281 records, and found just eight controlled trials in adults, 175 participants between them. Four reported significant effects. Four largely did not. Most carried a high or moderate risk of bias, doses ranged from 63 mg to 1,500 mg, and washout periods ran from two days to four weeks. The reviewers concluded there is insufficient evidence to support the health benefits of rooibos consumption given that limited base.
That is not the same as saying rooibos does nothing. It means the specific claims deserve individual grading rather than a blanket endorsement.

Two entries in that table deserve a closer look, because they are where popular writing goes furthest astray.
The blood pressure claim is the most repeated and the least supported. A 2010 study did find that a single 400 ml serving inhibited angiotensin-converting enzyme activity at 30 and 60 minutes, which is a plausible mechanism for a blood-pressure effect. But when trials measured actual blood pressure and heart rate, nothing moved. A mechanism is not an outcome.
The bone-health claim rests on rooibos containing calcium, manganese and fluoride. It does contain them, in small quantities per cup. No human trial has tested rooibos against a bone outcome, so the claim is an inference from a nutrition label, not a finding.
Worth noting too: in several trials the comparison treatments matched or beat rooibos. Grape seed extract outperformed it on glucose and insulin response in one study, and rooibos was merely comparable to green tea, amla berry and grape seed in another.
Side effects, cautions and drug interactions
For most people rooibos is a low-risk daily drink, caffeine-free and gentle enough to sit alongside dinner or bedtime. The specific concerns on record are worth knowing because they cluster around high intakes and particular medications.
Liver injury, rare but documented. Memorial Sloan Kettering’s herb monograph records several case reports. A 42-year-old woman who drank large amounts of rooibos developed elevated liver enzymes that returned to normal within a week of stopping. A 37-year-old presurgical patient developed liver toxicity and a low platelet count attributed to long-term large daily intake, prompting surgeons to switch from laparoscopic to open surgery. A 63-year-old was admitted with jaundice after rooibos consumption, with liver tests normalising after stopping. These are isolated reports across decades of mass consumption, and in each the pattern was heavy, prolonged intake with recovery on cessation.
Tacrolimus. This is the one genuinely specific interaction, and it is missing from nearly every benefits article. In a documented case, a woman who had undergone a bone marrow transplant and was drinking more than two litres of rooibos a day showed reduced blood concentrations of tacrolimus, the anti-rejection drug, and went on to develop graft-versus-host disease. Anyone on transplant immunosuppressants should treat rooibos as something to clear with their team, not assume is inert.
CYP3A enzyme induction. Animal work indicates rooibos can induce intestinal CYP3A, which could in principle lower blood levels of drugs metabolised through that pathway. Clinical relevance in humans has not been established.
Hormone-sensitive conditions. Compounds isolated from rooibos leaves have shown estrogenic activity in laboratory work, and MSK advises that patients with hormone-sensitive cancers use caution.
None of this makes a daily cup risky. It does mean that anyone on prescription medication, undergoing cancer treatment, or drinking litres a day should mention rooibos to a doctor or pharmacist. This article is general information, not medical advice.
How to brew it properly
Rooibos is the most forgiving infusion in the cupboard, and that is a chemical fact rather than a marketing line. Because it lacks the tannins that make over-steeped black tea harsh, it does not turn bitter when you leave it too long. Practically:
- Use fully boiling water. Unlike green tea, there is nothing delicate to scorch.
- Steep five to ten minutes. Longer extraction pulls out more of the polyphenols, and the flavour keeps improving rather than souring. A forgotten pot is still drinkable.
- Roughly one teaspoon of loose leaf per cup, or one bag per 200 ml, which is the serving size used in the six-week cardiovascular trial.
- Milk is optional and traditional. South Africans commonly take it with milk and sugar; because there is no astringency to cut, both work without the flavour flattening.
- Cold brew works well. Steep several hours in the fridge for a naturally sweet, caffeine-free iced drink.
- Green rooibos wants a lighter hand: slightly shorter steeping keeps its grassier character from turning vegetal.

Buying and storing
Check the origin claim first. Thanks to the protected designation, genuine rooibos is South African by definition, and reputable packs say so. Loose leaf shows you what you are buying: the long needle-like leaf of a decent grade, or fine siftings.
If you specifically want the aspalathin, you need to buy green rooibos deliberately, since red is the default everywhere. Expect to pay more and to find it in speciality shops rather than supermarkets. Watch flavoured blends too, where rooibos is a base for vanilla, citrus or chai spicing: pleasant, but less rooibos per cup than the packet implies.

Seeing where it grows
Rooibos is unusual among the world’s great infusions in having exactly one home, and it is reachable: the Cederberg mountains lie a few hours north of Cape Town, and the farms around Clanwilliam and Wupperthal welcome visitors. Harvest runs through the southern summer, roughly January to March, when the bushes are cut back and the green material is bruised, heaped and left to oxidise in the open air, turning the yards a deep rust colour.
